Cain the Dark is an infamous warrior. His amazing leadership on the battlefield and lack of mercy for his enemies has his name feared throughout the country... so why does someone of his stature continue to serve an insignificant feudal lord? Does it have something to do with the beautiful little thief who entered his life?

A Dark Gothic Yaoi Trilogy set in Medieval Italy. Created by Le Peruggine seven years before they worked on Winter Demon.

CAIN VOL:1
REVIEWED BY: SANDRA SCHOLES OF ACTIVE ANIME

"I swear on my very name that thou shalt live no more at peace. That my face shall become a recurrent nightmare in thy dreams. That on thy neck thou shalt feel the icy breath of death."

Set in medieval Italy, by order of the then pope a man is about to be executed, burned at the steak while their enemy Daniel is helping his lord Cain the Black with getting his armour on ready for a great battle, though his lord has cause for some celebration when he meets with him - the enemy are deciding to surrender and it comes with relief as the secret is they would not have been able to hold them off for long, and there is a problem, the Pope and the Bishop are not happy with Cain's actions toward their men as some view him as the devil himself.

A thief runs through the city streets with stolen bread only to be found by guards who take him to the baker who in turn has him beaten and thrown away. IN his instinct to run from everything he finally bumps into Cain the Black even sneaking into his castle to see him again - thus starts their friendship that builds up to a daring and sensual love afffair.

This novel, first in a series of three opens with a seriously colourful first page of the two main characters, and is one of Le Peruggine's early titles done well before their best seller Winter Demon hit the book shelves. It shows Cain the Dark's prowess as a famed leader, his weapon thrust into the ground while his lover hugs him protectively. The rest of the interior art is in grey scale and matches the others, images of the two of them together in love with each other.

The art style by Le Peruggine will remind readers of Berserk with its rather gritty and realistic lines and dark tones. There are places where the art is sketchy and even left as though it has been partly drawn in pencil, and that gives it a really rich range of tones as well.

The overall effect of the work is one of light and dark in depth and is interesting as it is Le Peruggine's first example of their manga art and one many will grow to like.

The story is one of love in perilous times, dark times where war is upon the people and only one man can make a difference in such a dangerous place as that one. Cain and the thief make an intriguing couple as complex as they are different.

IN SUMMARY: Intriguing and captures a fantasy age that's complete in many ways and very stylish.

Le Peruggine only did the art for winter demon, they're not the author. Yamila Abraham wrote Winter Demon. Go look it up. Cain really is a good novel though. Definately a nice read.
